Project 139 - Zwolle, The Netherlands

De Librije Restaurant Extension

Michelin-star restaurant De Librije, was once the library of a 16th century monastery. The restaurateurs felt that better accessibility was needed and wanted a proper entrance zone with a lounge area, shop, cloakroom and patisserie. We presented the ‘Louvre’ variant, in which a small entrance was to be added to the square, giving well-lit access to the underground entrance zone. We also presented the ‘Golden House’, extending the existing building into a 15m-high glass entrance zone with lounge area, shop, glass elevator and bridge, leaving the original building almost untouched. On the other side of the glass zone, a golden house mirroring the section gives a new face to the square. The design received building permission, but remains unbuilt.
