STUDIO SITEC designed a large activity centre, neighbourhood shops, a nursery/kindergarten and a district farm on the site, adjacent to where the Castle Werkeren once stood. This creates an ‘outer castle’ urban setting, from which the castle site was to be accessible. The outdoor area is public space accessible around the clock, with playing areas, lounge area and communal gardens. The newly-designed buildings are designed from one colour- and material-family but have distinctive shapes, together creating an ‘outer castle’. The architecture is completely biobased and constructed from circular materials. Meanwhile, the buildings have green roof gardens for water retention and biodiversity.
