Project 58 - Zwolle, The Netherlands

House Wichers

House Wichers is the combination of an 18th-century canal house and newly-built canal house in the city of Zwolle. In 1999, a private client, living in a small but beautiful canal house, acquired the adjacent lot. The existing building was demolished and a new canal house was added, resulting in new bedrooms for the son and two working spaces for the couple. The new house blends with the historical canal elevation on the scale of the street with its object shape, materials and pitched roof, but boasts its own identity through brickwork detailing, steel window frames and a self-assured chimney. This new house was a first in the development of new structures along the Thorbeckegracht canal.
