Project 277 - Zwolle, The Netherlands
Bulthaup Shop
The monument building, now part of the Bulthaup kitchen studio, was once a warehouse belonging to the rich merchants of the Thorbeckegracht. Later, when the small houses on the Assiesplein were demolished, the back elevation of the monument became visible. We restored the historical fabric, adding new volume at the north. The architecture is a modern interpretation of a historical volume with a pitched roof. A copper slab is folded in the shape of a house but on the east, is folded back horizontally, opening on to the square. The front of the volume is an open elevation, with double wooden window frames. The two volumes are cut loose and light enters the building. A glass bridge and glass cut complete the subtle connection between old and new.
